Have you ever felt like pulling your hair out watching your child struggle at school?
- You are being told over and over that nothing is technically wrong with your child, but you notice the quiet anxiety.
- Emotional swings.
- Foggy days at school.
- Nights that don’t quite restore them.
I want to tell you about a boy called Adam.
Adam was ten when his parents came looking for answers.
He was super smart but school and social situations felt overwhelming.
Sleep was light and broken.
His digestion was slow, never fully settled, and there was that constant sense that his system was always working a bit too hard to cope.
When Adam came to see Caleb, the question was never, “What is wrong with this child?”
The question was, “What has his body been trying to manage for a long time, and what support has been missing?”
This part matters because Caleb recognised Adam immediately.
Not because the symptoms were identical, but because Caleb used to be a bit like Adam himself.
As a child, he was sensitive, reactive, and easily overwhelmed by his environment, and he knows firsthand what it feels like to live in a body that never quite feels settled.
He was born with eczema that turned into psoriasis and much to his disgust, he had to follow a strict diet during primary school.
The ‘stigma’ he felt still scars his soul, and caused him to study cellular health for many years.
That lived experience is part of what makes him listen differently, and look deeper, rather than reaching for labels or quick fixes.
Because here is the truth most people still don’t understand.
The brain does not operate on its own.
Just like a plane cannot fly without wings, a human cannot function properly without microbes.
We are not a sterile machine with a few bacteria inside us.
We are a living ecosystem, a walking island of trillions of microbes, inside the gut, on the skin, in the mouth, and in constant exchange with the world around us through breathing, touching, eating, and living.
Some microbes are protective and some are opportunistic.
Health is not about eliminating them, it is about balance, diversity, and resilience.
So with Adam, Caleb did what he always does.
He looked under the bonnet.
He supported the foundations first: real food, gentle fibre increases, hydration, and rhythm.
Not forcing change, because you cannot dump fertiliser on a depleted garden and expect it to thrive overnight.
He used targeted prebiotics known to support beneficial strains, and paired them with specific bacteria that have been studied for their calming effects through the gut-brain axis.
And then something quiet powerful happened.
A few months later, Adam’s parents said he was calmer.
He was sleeping better.
He was no longer getting overwhelmed about going to school.
Instead of swinging between emotional extremes, he was more in the middle zone, more present, and able to cope.
That was not mindset work.
That was biology finding its balance again.
When the microbiome is depleted, it can send inflammatory signals to the brain, increasing vigilance, anxiety, fog, and reactivity.
When the gut environment becomes more stable, the nervous system follows.
This is also why, how we live matters so much.
We have become obsessed with sterilising life.
Of course, hygiene matters, but there is a difference between clean and sterile.
Your skin has a microbiome too.
Constant use of antimicrobial hand washes and harsh sanitisers, especially in children, can disrupt that protective layer that helps train the immune system and build resilience.
Our children’s ecosystems are under pressure.
This is one of the reasons Caleb teaches Fearless Food Fermenting.

Fermented foods are not a trend.
They are one of the oldest ways humans have supported their inner ecosystem.
When introduced gently and correctly, they help restore microbial diversity, support digestion, calm inflammatory signals, and strengthen the gut-brain connection.
Fearless Food Fermenting is about removing fear and overwhelm, and teaching people to use fermentation as a supportive daily practice, not a rigid protocol.
It is especially powerful for families who want to support gut and nervous system health in a way that feels natural and sustainable.
If your child reminds you of Adam, or if you see parts of yourself in this story, know that you don’t have to do everything at once.
Small changes have a huge ripple effect and diversity matters more than perfection.
When the gut is supported, the brain becomes a safer place to operate from.
