Last winter, a woman came to see me at Purple House.
She had been to four different doctors in two years.
She had a folder full of test results, all of them normal.
And yet she couldn’t sleep.
Her heart raced for no reason.
She had constant muscle cramps, blurry vision, and a low hum of anxiety that never quite left her.
She was told it was stress.
She was told it was age.
She was told it was in her head.
She had started to believe them.
By the time she sat down across from me, she was exhausted in a way that sleep couldn’t fix.
She told me she felt like she was slowly disappearing.
Like the colour was draining out of her life.
She used to love cooking, gardening, and going for walks with her husband.
Now she just got through the day and fell into bed at night, still tired.
I asked her a few questions.
I looked at her signs and symptoms.
And within minutes, I had a very strong suspicion about what we were dealing with.
Three weeks later, she rang me in tears, because she was feeling so much better.
What we addressed was one simple, profound, and almost universally overlooked deficiency.
Magnesium.
The mineral your doctor is probably not testing for.
Here is something that surprises most people when I tell them.
Only 1% of the magnesium in your body is stored in the blood.
That means a standard blood test, the kind your GP runs as part of a routine panel, can come back completely normal while your cells and organs are desperately starved of this vital mineral.
This is not a conspiracy.
It is simply a blind spot in how medicine has been practised for the last hundred years.
And it has cost millions of people their quality of life, and in many cases, far more than that.
80% of us are deficient in magnesium.
That is eight out of ten people you know.
It is very likely you.
It is almost certainly someone in your household right now.
And the tragedy is that most of those people will spend years, sometimes decades, going from doctor to doctor, prescription to prescription, diagnosis to diagnosis, without anyone ever looking at the fundamental deficiency at the root of so much of their suffering.
Does this sound like you?
Here are the early warning signs of magnesium deficiency.
As you read through this list, I want you to count how many feel familiar.
- Physical and mental fatigue.
- Tension in the upper back, shoulders, and neck.
- Headaches.
- PMS, fluid retention, and breast tenderness.
- Weakness.
- Confusion.
- Anxiety.
- Irritability.
- Nervousness.
- Depression.
- Mental illness.
- Seizures.
- Tantrums in children.
- Insomnia.
- Cramps and spasms.
- Twitching under the eyes.
- Calcification of organs.
- Hormonal imbalances.
- Poor digestion.
- Weak bones.
- Abnormal heart rhythms.
- Chronic fatigue.
- Fibromyalgia.
- Blurred vision.
- Mouth ulcers.
- Sighing frequently.
- Feeling like you cannot quite catch your breath.
- Asthma.
- Chest tightness.
- Constipation.
- Sensitivity to sound and light.
If you counted three or more, your body is sending you a message.
If you counted ten or more, this blog may be one of the most important things you read this year.
Now, here are the signs of severe magnesium deficiency.
These symptoms are often mistaken for diabetes, and for good reason, which I will explain in a moment.
- Extreme thirst.
- Extreme hunger.
- Frequent urination.
- Easy bruising.
- Poor wound healing.
- Dry, itchy skin.
- Vision that changes from day to day.
- Unusual and unrelenting tiredness.
- Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
- Candida and yeast infections that keep returning.
- Panic attacks.
- Cloudy thinking, confusion, or hallucinations.
- Tooth decay.
- Slow healing of fractures and bones.
- Kidney stones.
The diabetes connection nobody talks about
When I show this second list to people, the response is almost always the same.
They say, “Wait, aren’t those diabetes symptoms?”
Yes.
Exactly.
That is precisely the point.
Magnesium deficiency and diabetes are so closely intertwined that researchers have called them synonymous.
Magnesium is essential for insulin to function properly.
When you are deficient, insulin resistance follows.
And because diabetics lose magnesium through excessive urination, they require more of it than most people, creating a vicious cycle that medication alone cannot break.
The same is true of heart disease.
Magnesium is critical for healthy heart rhythm, healthy blood pressure, and the prevention of arterial calcification.
It is not an exaggeration to say that magnesium deficiency is one of the great unaddressed drivers of cardiovascular illness in our time.
We talk so much about heart disease being the number one killer.
We run marathons for cancer research.
We wear ribbons for Alzheimer’s.
But what about the foundational deficiency sitting underneath so many of these conditions, quietly driving them forward, never tested for, never addressed?
If you are feeling off, and your doctors keep telling you it is all in your head, or that your results are normal, please hear me when I say this.
You are not imagining it.
You are very likely suffering from chronic magnesium deficiency.
And there is something you can do about it, starting today.
Why we are all running on empty
You might be wondering how something so fundamental has become so widespread.
The answer is not one thing.
It is a cascade of things that have compounded over the last hundred years.
Our soils are depleted.
Modern industrial farming strips minerals from the earth, and the magnesium that used to come naturally through the food we eat simply is not there anymore.
Even if you eat well, the vegetables you are buying may have grown in soil that no longer contains meaningful levels of magnesium.
What little mineral remains in the soil is often bound by synthetic fertilizers, rendering it biologically unavailable.
The plant grows.
It looks like a vegetable.
But the nutritional content is a shadow of what it once was.
Then there is the food itself.
Highly processed food does not just fail to deliver magnesium.
It actively steals it.
Here is a fact that stops most people in their tracks.
One molecule of sugar requires fifty molecules of magnesium to be digested.
One molecule of mercury steals two hundred molecules of magnesium from your body.
If you or your children are eating packaged food, drinking soft drinks, or have any kind of toxic load from vaccines, amalgam fillings, or environmental exposure, your magnesium is being burned through at a rate your diet cannot replace.
Pharmaceutical drugs are another major driver.
Many of the most commonly prescribed medications, including blood pressure medications, antibiotics, antacids, and contraceptives, actively deplete magnesium to dangerous levels.
If you are on any ongoing medication, your need for magnesium supplementation is even more urgent.
Gut health is another piece of this puzzle that cannot be overlooked.
Magnesium absorption depends entirely on the health of your intestinal lining.
Most people, whether they know it or not, have some degree of leaky gut, caused by toxins, parasites, Candida overgrowth, and years of processed food.
If your gut is compromised, you simply cannot absorb and hold onto the magnesium you take in, even if you are supplementing.
And here is the final layer.
Most oral magnesium supplements on the market are in a form that the body cannot properly absorb.
People take their tablet, feel nothing, conclude that magnesium does not work for them, and stop.
But it was never the mineral that failed them.
It was the form.
Children and magnesium
I want to say something specific to the parents and grandparents reading this, because this is close to my heart.
Children with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing challenges are almost universally deficient in magnesium.
When you address this deficiency, you often see profound shifts.
The body rocking softens.
The teeth grinding eases.
The poor concentration and irritability begin to lift.
Aggressive moods calm down.
Sound and light sensitivity decrease.
Sleep improves.
Magnesium does not cure autism.
But it nourishes the nervous system in ways that help a child feel more comfortable in their own body and more present in the world around them.
As a grandmother of thirteen, this matters deeply to me.
If there is a child in your life who is struggling, please consider whether magnesium deficiency might be contributing to their symptoms.
What Pete and I actually recommend
After more than twenty-five years of clinical practice, Pete and I have tried many forms of magnesium.
We have seen what works and what does not.
And these are the products we consistently come back to, and that we stock in our shop at Purple House because we believe in them.
The first is Dr. Sandra Cabot’s Magnesium Complete, available in both tablet and powder form.
This is a high-quality, well-absorbed form of magnesium that we have seen deliver real results for our clients again and again.
Whether you prefer tablets or powder will come down to personal preference, and both are excellent.
The second is Magnesium Oil Spray.
This contains magnesium chloride and is absorbed directly through the skin, bypassing the digestive system.
For people with compromised gut health, leaky gut, or severe deficiency, transdermal magnesium is a game-changer.
We recommend rubbing it onto the skin daily, particularly on the legs, abdomen, and soles of the feet.
The third, and this is one many people overlook, is Boron.
Boron is a trace mineral that acts as a transport vehicle for magnesium, helping it cross into the cells and tissues where it is needed.
Taking boron alongside your magnesium dramatically increases its effectiveness.
It is inexpensive, safe, and makes a measurable difference.
And finally, if you want to address your gut health at the same time, which will increase your body’s ability to absorb and retain magnesium over the long term, we recommend Spore Probiotics, or Syntol, or Immuno-Synbiotic.
These are staples in our clinic for a reason.
All of these are available in our online shop, which is open every day.
If you prefer to come in and talk to one of us in person, our shop is open Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 9am to 5pm.
You are always welcome to call us on 03 6428 3007.
One final thought
After oxygen, water, salt, and Iodine, magnesium is the most important element your body needs to stay strong, healthy, and well.
It affects every organ.
Every system.
Every cell.
