You’ve probably heard the buzz about Vitamin D—it’s often hailed as the “sunshine vitamin” and promoted as a miracle cure for everything from weak bones to a sluggish immune system.
Everyone is jumping on the Vitamin D bandwagon, pushing us to consume it in pills or fortified foods to ward off all kinds of ailments.
But, as with many things in health and wellness world, there’s more to the story.
Today, I want to share some critical insights you might not have heard—insights that could help you make more informed decisions about your health.
The Vitamin D Craze: Why All the Hype?
Vitamin D is indeed essential for your body.
But did you know that the form of Vitamin D your body produces from sunlight is very different from the synthetic form that’s being sold in pills?
Vitamin D is not even really a vitamin in the traditional sense—it’s part of a complex family of hormones known as secosteroids, which our skin produces in response to sunlight.
These “sunshine hormones” work together to help regulate a range of bodily functions, from maintaining bone health to modulating immune response.
However, the synthetic Vitamin D that’s commonly added to foods and sold in supplements is a completely different story.
It’s not the same as the sunshine hormones your body produces naturally, and it comes with a host of health risks.
A Brief History: From Sunshine to Synthetic D
Back in the 1930s, scientists discovered that when sunlight hits your skin, it triggers the production of a family of hormones.
These hormones, commonly known as sunshine hormones, are a natural response to sunlight, helping the body regulate everything from gene expression to bone density.
The problem is, when Big Pharma saw a profit potential, they didn’t look for a way to promote natural sun exposure or provide natural sources of these hormones—they aimed to replicate the effects of sunlight in the lab and bottle it.
They narrowed their focus to a single isolate in the hormone family and started manufacturing a synthetic version.
This was then marketed as Vitamin D, though it’s not truly a vitamin.
The synthetic version of Vitamin D was pushed as a one-size-fits-all solution, but it’s important to remember that it lacks the balance and complexity of the natural sunshine hormones your body makes.
Today, synthetic Vitamin D is cleverly branded as the “Sunshine Vitamin,” and consumers—encouraged by marketing and advertising—couldn’t wait to start taking it.
But here’s where things go wrong: what your body makes naturally when exposed to sunlight is a complex orchestra of hormones.
In contrast, the synthetic version is like a lone, out-of-tune instrument trying to play an entire symphony by itself.
What Are Sunshine Hormones?
When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces dozens of different sunshine hormones, not just one.
These hormones help regulate various functions in the body, from boosting mood and increasing bone density to controlling inflammation.
Importantly, they interact with over 900 genes, making them a key player in your overall health.
But here’s the fascinating part: your body knows when it has had enough.
After about 20 minutes of sun exposure, your skin naturally halts the production of excess sunshine hormones.
The heat created by the bombardment of sunlight on your skin acts as a safeguard, preventing your body from producing too much of a good thing.
This natural regulatory mechanism ensures that you get just the right amount—neither too much nor too little.
The Danger of Synthetic Vitamin D
Here’s where synthetic Vitamin D pills and fortified foods come into play—and where things get risky.
Unlike the natural sunshine hormones your body produces, synthetic Vitamin D doesn’t come with the body’s built-in regulatory system.
Once you swallow it, it bypasses the body’s natural protections, flooding your system with a foreign substance that it doesn’t know how to handle properly.
Some of the dangers of synthetic Vitamin D include:
- Calcium Overload and Calcification:
One of the biggest risks is that synthetic Vitamin D forces your body to absorb too much calcium.
This can lead to calcification in your arteries, kidneys, and other tissues, increasing your risk of heart disease, kidney failure, and other serious conditions.
Over time, this can cause a dangerous buildup of calcium in your body, known as hypercalcemia which is the main cause of accelerated aging.
- Fat Storage and Toxicity:
Unlike naturally produced sunshine hormones, which your body can regulate and quickly metabolize, synthetic Vitamin D gets stored in your fat cells.
It accumulates over time, causing a slow build-up that can lead to toxicity.
While your body can stop producing sunshine hormones after about 20 minutes in the sun, synthetic Vitamin D can linger in your system for months, throwing your hormones out of balance.
- Potassium Deficiency:
Another serious issue with synthetic Vitamin D is its effect on potassium levels in the body.
Research has shown that people who regularly take Vitamin D supplements often have low potassium levels, which can cause a host of problems including muscle weakness, fatigue, and even heart or thyroid complications because these two organs are potassium-driven organs.
Potassium is an essential electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance, nerve signals, and muscle contractions.
When synthetic Vitamin D disrupts potassium levels, it can lead to a cascade of health issues, including increased iron absorption, which can further exacerbate oxidative stress and lead to fatigue.
- Hormonal Imbalance:
Synthetic Vitamin D is a hormone disruptor.
It can mess with your body’s finely-tuned hormonal system, leading to a range of problems, from weakened immunity to poor bone health.
It’s important to understand that synthetic Vitamin D isn’t harmless—far from it.
High doses of synthetic Vitamin D were originally used as rat poison because it causes a fatal calcium overload.
When we ingest synthetic Vitamin D in supplements or fortified foods, we are exposing ourselves to the same risks, albeit more slowly.
Why the Deficiency Hypothesis Falls Short
Much of the hype around Vitamin D stems from what’s called the deficiency hypothesis.
You’ve probably heard this before: low levels of Vitamin D are blamed for everything from osteoporosis to cancer.
To combat these supposed deficiencies, we’re encouraged to take Vitamin D supplements or consume fortified foods.
But here’s the thing: this hypothesis is built on weak science.
Most of the studies supporting it only show statistical associations, not causal relationships. For example, it’s like saying that because everyone who died of a heart attack had a coffee maker in their house, the coffee maker must be to blame.
It’s a flawed and overly simplistic way to look at health.
When it comes to Vitamin D levels, there’s also a big question about what the “ideal” levels should be.
Who decided that we all need to have a certain level of Vitamin D in our blood?
These guidelines were largely influenced by Big Pharma, which has a vested interest in getting people to take supplements and fortified foods.
The Sun and Cancer:
Busting the Myths
One of the most common reasons people take synthetic Vitamin D is because they’ve been told that it prevents cancer.
However, this claim is based on short-term studies, many of which were conducted by researchers with ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
These studies show a slight statistical correlation between higher Vitamin D levels and lower cancer rates over about five years.
But here’s the problem: cancer takes decades to develop, so any study that only lasts five years isn’t telling the full story.
Longer-term studies suggest that people who take synthetic Vitamin D for more than five years may have higher cancer rates.
This is because synthetic Vitamin D disrupts the body’s immune system by lowering good inflammation, which is crucial for fighting cancer.
The truth is, that the natural sunlight that our bodies have evolved with is one of the best ways to protect against cancer.
Responsible sun exposure (without sunscreen) boosts your body’s production of sunshine hormones, which have been shown to reduce the risk of many diseases, including cancer, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
By contrast, there’s no compelling evidence that synthetic Vitamin D offers these same benefits.
So, what’s the solution if you’re worried about getting enough Vitamin D but don’t want to risk the dangers of synthetic supplements?
The best and most natural way to get your Vitamin D is through sun exposure.
Just 15 to 20 minutes of sun on your skin each day can stimulate your body’s production of sunshine hormones in a safe and balanced way. If you live in a place where sunlight is limited, especially during the winter months, you can also get natural Vitamin D from certain foods.
Some of the best food sources of natural sunshine hormones include:
- Mackerel
- Sardines
- Beef or chicken liver
- Eggs
- Organic butter
In Conclusion:
Hormone D is fat soluble so we need lots of well-digested healthy fats in our body.
Many people are used to eating a low-fat diet and their liver/gallbladder system needs a helping hand to start metabolizing good fats like butter, cream, meat fats, and coconut oil again.
Beetflow and the Ultimate Vitality Boost Package will give your liver/gallbladder a boost in the right direction.
We have had clients who struggled with cream and butter, but after several months of supplementing with Beetflow and enzymes (as found in the UVB) they could eat these healthy fats without burping, bloating or tummy aches.
