Is your child crabby, cranky, and emotionally overwhelmed?
What about being reactive and unable to concentrate at school?
Or worse, being disruptive?
These are the concerns I hear from parents every single week, as well as problems with sleeping, teeth grinding at night, and getting upset over nothing.
Underneath all of this, there is usually a sense that something is ‘off’, but medical tests come back normal.
Yet something isn’t quite right.
At the Purple House, we often take a good, hard look at the child’s diet.
It’s been clinically proven that what your children eat directly influences their brain and mood, their behaviour, and their ability to feel calm and safe within themselves.
Dr. David Perlmutter, author of the best-selling book Grain Brain, discusses the impact of modern foods on the brain and how inflammation can interfere with clarity, focus, and emotional regulation.
While there are many different opinions in the nutrition space, what we are seeing on the ground, in real families, is that the gut and the brain are deeply connected, and when one is under stress, the other follows.
A little girl named Harper came to see us.
She was bright, sensitive, and full of potential, but her system was not at ease.
She was increasingly cranky and reactive, grinding her teeth loudly at night; her sleep was unsettled, and at school she was struggling to concentrate, which was beginning to affect her confidence and sense of belonging.
But what made this even more concerning for her family was that IBS ran strongly through their family line.
The parents were worried whether Harper was destined to follow the same path of digestive woes and food sensitivities, as well as chronic health challenges, as many members of the family.
We often see families begin to believe that because something is “in the family,” it is inevitable.
But the reality is that in today’s world, digestive issues are incredibly common across the population, with around 1 in 5 people experiencing symptoms of IBS, and chronic pain now affecting approximately 1 in 5 adults, and increasingly showing up earlier in children and teenagers.
So what once appeared to be purely genetic is often a reflection of shared environments, shared diets, and shared stress patterns over time.
And this is exactly what we saw with Harper.
Rather than trying to manage her behaviour from the outside in, we turned our attention to her body.
We looked at what her gut could actually handle in that moment, because one of the biggest misunderstandings I see is that foods that are considered “healthy” are not always helpful for a child whose gut is already inflamed or compromised.
So instead of overwhelming her system, we simplified.
We removed the foods that were irritating her gut and nervous system, we tested for sensitivities, and we began supporting her body with foods that were easier to digest, more nourishing, and better aligned with what her system needed at that stage of healing.
We also recommended three different supplements.
And within weeks, everything began to shift.
Her sleep became deeper and more settled; the teeth grinding stopped; her moods softened; her focus returned; and her confidence began to come back online.
Her teacher noticed it first.
And now, that same teacher is sending more and more children our way because she cares deeply about her students.
If you are concerned about your child, start with the gut.
Not from the outside in, or by trying to correct behaviour alone, but from the inside out, by supporting the body so that the mind can settle naturally.
Because the mind is the body and the body is the mind, and there is no separation between the two.
The 7 Most Common Brain-Inflaming Foods
If you are ready to begin making changes, these are the first things I recommend reducing or removing, as they are known to disrupt both the gut and the brain over time:
- Sugary drinks, including fruit juices
- Refined carbohydrates such as breads, cakes, and biscuits
- Trans fats and processed vegetable oils
- Highly processed foods full of additives
- Artificial sweeteners like aspartame
- Alcohol
- High-mercury fish such as shark, swordfish, and large tuna
Supporting the Gut (In a Way That Actually Works)
What matters most is not just what food is considered healthy, but what your child’s gut can actually tolerate and benefit from right now.
In the early stages of healing, many children do far better with:
- Warm, nourishing bone broths
- Healthy fats that stabilise the brain and nervous system, like butter, meat fats, coconut oil, ghee, or macadamia nut oil
- Simple, easy-to-digest meals
- Fermented foods, which are already partially broken down and support the microbiome
Fermented foods are powerful; they do some of the work for the body, rather than asking it to do all the work itself, and are packed with vitamins, enzymes, and healthy bacteria.
For many families, especially when life is busy, having something simple and nutrient-dense can make all the difference.
In our family, we often make the Purple House Smoothie, which contains good fats and Vital All-In-One.
Click Here to Check it out in the free ebook
Vital All-In-One provides the equivalent of 5 to 9 servings of organic vegetables in one scoop, in a form that is easy to absorb and gentle on the system.
It is something our own grandchildren use and thrive on, and for many parents, it becomes an anchor in their child’s daily routine.
Harper also needed help with a gentle detox of heavy metals and parasites as well as a broad base nutritional support supplement (essential for all children) – Mighty Mins.
We generally recommend BioRay, which is one of the best ways to support children by removing unwanted organisms.
A decrease in unreasonable anger, irritability, and reduced stress means more fun for everyone.
This remedy:
- Reduces angry outbursts
- Decreases sugar cravings
- Stops teeth grinding
- Stops itchy rectum
How to take:
- Mix into water or your child’s favourite drink.
- Take 1 ml per 50 lbs of body weight, 2 times per day.
- Intended for kids 12 months or older.

If something inside you is saying … “There must be another way…”
Please listen to that.
Because your child is not the problem.
Their body is communicating.
And when you learn how to support it properly …
Everything can change, and I say that as a mum of six children with 13 grandchildren, a practitioner for over 25 years, a Master of Natural Therapies, and a current Doctorate candidate in Natural Medicine, after seeing many children transform at our clinic since 2000.
If you have been feeling concerned about your child, please don’t wait for things to “just pass,” because in my experience, children rarely grow out of these patterns without support; they begin to thrive with the right support.
Your options are simple:
- Book a consultation for your child, or
- Join one of our upcoming workshops,
- Or start by supporting their nutrition at home
You don’t have to do everything at once, but doing 1 thing differently is often where the shift begins.
