Before I tell you about the most entertaining morning we have had on the farm in a long time, I need to introduce you to some very important residents of our property.
Meet our Tasmanian Native Hens.
If you are not from Tasmania, you have probably never heard of them.
I certainly had not.
When I migrated here from the Netherlands in 1981, nobody warned me that I would one day share my property with a bird so peculiar, bold, and full of personality that I would find myself watching them instead of the television.
The Tasmanian Native Hen is found nowhere else on earth.
It is a chunky, fast moving, olive brown bird with a bright green bill, fierce red eyes, and absolutely no interest in flying whatsoever, because why would you fly when you can run at 50 kilometres per hour?
That is right.
This bird cannot fly and does not care.
It simply runs faster than almost anything that tries to catch it.
We have three mobs of them on our property.
And I use the word mobs deliberately because mafia mob is exactly the right word.
They are highly territorial, deeply opinionated, and fiercely committed to their boundaries.
Each mob has its own patch, trail, daily mission, and its own very loud opinion about what happens when those boundaries are crossed.
When rival mobs meet at the border, the noise that erupts is something I still cannot adequately describe to people.
It is somewhere between a screech, a cackle, and a smoke alarm having a nervous breakdown.
Free entertainment every single day.
Which brings me to the morning everything changed, when mob loyalties dissolved and territorial disputes were forgotten.
About ten native hens from rival groups assembled in a perfect silent circle around something far more interesting than their borders.

Our neighbours’ roosters had come to visit.
And they were having an absolute ding dong.
Now you need to understand something about these roosters and our native hens.
They have nothing to do with each other, as they are entirely different species.
These roosters could never threaten a native hen, mate with one, or affect their territory, chicks, or morning mission in any way whatsoever.
And yet there stood ten native hens, in a perfect circle, watching with absolute riveted fascination as two roosters from a completely different species sorted out their pecking order.
Feathers ruffled.
Chests puffed.
All the posturing and crowing and carrying on that roosters do when their pride and future are at stake, pecking at each other with focused aggression.
Our native hens were riveted by the spectacle.
Eventually the roosters sorted themselves out, as roosters always do, and wandered back to where they came from.
The circle dissolved.
The rival mob members remembered their differences and went back to ignoring each other with great dignity.
Territorial programming resumed as normal.
But I could not stop thinking about it for the rest of the day.
Because those native hens?
That is us.
We Are All Native Hens at Heart
Think of the last time you got completely absorbed in a drama that had absolutely nothing to do with you.
A celebrity split.
Two politicians fighting.
A Facebook argument between two people you barely know.
A reality television show where strangers yell at each other.
Relatives openly hating on each other.
How often do we drop everything to watch with complete fascination while two roosters from a completely different species sort out their pecking order?
And meanwhile, our morning mission waits.
Our real life, the purposeful one, the one with direction and meaning, remains on pause while we give our precious time and energy to a fight that was never ours.
This is not a judgment.
It is profoundly human.
We are wired for story, drama, and social information.
Watching how the pecking order plays out is ancient survival programming.
Our ancestors needed to know who was in charge and who was falling from grace to stay alive.
But here is the thing.
You are not living in a medieval village anymore.
The energy of drama is the complete opposite of the energy of abundance.
It is unresolved trauma energy, from a healer’s point of view.
Why would you increase your trauma energy for roosters on your screen that are not even your species?
If you are finding yourself constantly caught up in drama, you need some serious healing.
What the Native Hens Can Teach Us
As funny as the rooster circle moment was, the Tasmanian Native Hen is one of the most extraordinary creatures I have ever had the privilege of watching up close.
And I believe they have three profound things to teach us.
Lesson One – Find Your Speed.
- The Tasmanian Native Hen cannot fly.
- It has no wings to speak of.
- And yet it has developed such extraordinary ground speed, up to 50 kilometres per hour, that predators simply cannot catch it.
It found another way.
When the conventional path was taken, it did not sit down and accept defeat.
It did not mourn the wings it never had.
It ran faster than anyone thought possible and built a life that worked magnificently on its own terms.
How many times have you felt like your wings had been clipped?
Like the conventional path was closed off to you?
Like everyone else seemed to be flying while you were stuck on the ground?
The native hen says, find another way and run like the wind.
You have more speed and resilience in you than you know.
Do not give up on yourself.
Lesson Two – Walk Your Mission Every Single Day.
Every morning without fail, one of our mobs marches off in the direction of the Forth School grounds, following the exact same trail.
Another mob heads off purposefully in a completely different direction.
They are on a mission.
We have absolutely no idea what the mission is.
They have never explained it to us, and frankly they do not seem to feel the need.
They just know where they are going and they go.
- No second guessing.
- No scrolling through other people’s trails wondering if their path looks better.
- No waiting for permission, validation, or a sign from the Universe.
Just the trail, the mission, and an unwavering daily commitment to showing up and walking their purpose.
What would your life look like if you walked your trail with that kind of quiet certainty every single morning?
Not knowing every step of the path.
Just knowing the direction and trusting your feet.
That is what I call living from your Inner Tutor.
Your own deep knowing.
The voice that does not need to explain itself because it simply knows that not following your trail is not an option.
Lesson Three – Build the Village Your Chicks Deserve.
This is the part that moves me the most.
Every chick is surrounded by three adults at all times, which is why our native hen chicks survive at a far higher rate than our ducklings or our chickens.
Three adults, not one exhausted mother doing everything alone while the world tells her she should be managing better and feeling grateful.
Three adults, hypervigilant, fully present, sharing the load, making sure not a single chick is ever left unguarded or unsupported for even a moment.
And those chicks thrive.
Of course they do.
Because that is what children actually need.
Not a perfect parent.
Not a superhuman mother running on no sleep and black coffee and mum guilt.
But a village.
A circle of devoted adults who show up, share the weight, and make sure the little ones are never, ever alone.
Our society has quietly dismantled that village.
We have told mothers, you are strong enough, you can do it all, you have got this.
And then we have watched them buckle under the weight of something never meant to be carried by one person.
The native hen never got that memo, and the chicks are thriving because of it.
If you are a mother carrying too much alone right now, I want you to hear this.
You were not designed for this.
The struggle is not a character flaw.
It is a structural problem.
You were meant to have a village, and it is time to rebuild our communities to support parents and children.
So Here Is What Our Native Hens Are Teaching Me
Know which fights are yours.
The roosters will always be fighting somewhere.
On your screen, in your newsfeed, at the school gate, in the extended family group chat.
You do not have to form the circle.
You do not have to give them your morning.
You are allowed to keep walking your trail and stay in your lane.
Find your speed.
When one door closes, find another way and run faster than anyone expected.
You have more capacity than you know.
Stop waiting for the wings and start running.
Walk your mission daily.
You do not have to know the whole path.
You just have to know the next step and walk it with conviction, the same way our native hens march off every single morning without a single doubt that they are going exactly where they are supposed to go.
Build your village.
You were not designed to do this alone.
Not parenting, not healing, not business, not life.
The chicks who are surrounded by three adults survive.
So do the humans.
If your village has shrunk, it is time to rebuild it.
Your trail is calling.
