The first person you will see is Lisanne.
Lisanne is not only the brains behind the Purple House Kitchen; she is its soul.
She’s the one who:
- Writes and designs our menus.
- Sources our organic coffee and teas (so every sip you take is both delicious and healing).
- Cooks with passion, creativity, and resilience.
- Holds the kitchen together with her “nothing is too hard” attitude.
And all her cooking is done without a microwave, toxic oils, or refined/processed ingredients.
She makes everything from scratch!
But Lisanne is more than a chef.
She is an artist, a teacher, a survivor, and a mother whose fierce love literally kept her son alive.

Lisanne’s Story
At 18, Lisanne packed her bags and lived overseas for a year, immersing herself in different cultures.
That experience broadened her horizons and showed her that food is never “just food” — it’s history coming alive on our table.
It helps us transcend everything that keeps humans divided and reconnects us to something deep within us: a shared commonality.
She also knows what it means to survive the unimaginable.
At just 4 years old, she was struck by a truck.
Like me, she experienced her own “truck moment” — those life-shaking events that strip away what doesn’t matter and plant seeds of strength and courage.
Strangely enough, when Lisanne woke up from her unconscious state, she called Pete “daddy” instead of “papa” — her brain had made the switch from Dutch to English.
Today, Lisanne is the devoted mother of 16-year-old twins Cohen and Elijah, and 8-year-old Rosie.
Elijah, who was born with a rare, life-threatening inflammatory disease, would not be here today if not for Lisanne’s steadfast love and patience.
When other young mums went out socializing, Lisanne stayed at home, making sure Elijah was alright.
His condition was as baffling as it was life-threatening.
Eventually, his life came to a grinding halt at age 12.
His body didn’t have any reserves left.
When he started high school, he only weighed 25 kilos.
Thankfully, the Universe delivered a miracle right on time: a pediatrician in Melbourne came up with a diagnosis.
Elijah had NOMID, a rare genetic mutation that causes bone deformities, sometimes blindness or deafness, and brain injury.
Usually, children with NOMID die very young.
Thankfully, a daily injection of Anakinra has given Elijah his life back.
Today, he thrives.
He even works as our barista on Saturdays.
Lisanne’s story is one of resilience, artistry, and unconditional love.
And you taste that story in every dish she creates.

Coffee Please!
The tortured history of coffee:
- In the 1500s, coffee was banned in Mecca.
- In 1675, England’s King Charles II tried to ban coffeehouses.
- In Sweden, coffee was banned in the 18th century. Even coffee cups were confiscated.
- In Prussia, Frederick the Great tried to discourage coffee in favour of beer.
- In Ethiopia, only monks could originally drink coffee.
- Some US cities once taxed coffee heavily as a luxury item.
- Today, non-organic coffee contains over 110 toxic substances — and this is the reason we only serve organic coffee at the Purple House Kitchen.
