This summer, we lost about ten trees in one section of our garden.
They simply died without an explanation.
They left a bare, exposed patch where there used to be life, shade, and structure.
And for a moment, it felt like a loss.
And yes trees can die for many reasons; drought stress, root damage, fungal disease, soil imbalance, even sudden environmental shifts.
Sometimes the cause is obvious.
Sometimes it isn’t.
Just like in life not every loss comes with an explanation.
Instead of dwelling on what was gone, I saw something new and exciting.
I saw a winding path framed with bushes, flowers, and softness inviting people deeper into the garden.
Ben brought it to life last week.
He carved a gentle, winding path through what used to be dense forest, lined it with farm rocks, and opened up a space we never even knew we needed.
The first time I walked it, I couldn’t help but smile.
It felt so right, like it had always been waiting to be revealed.
And as I walked beneath the remaining trees, trees we had never really had access to before, I could already see how beautiful it will look next summer.
This is what it means to turn a loss into a win.
To roll with the punches instead of resisting them.
One of my mentors once said to me: “Never dwell on a loss. Focus on the return.”
How is the Universe going to make it up to you?
If you lose a loved one life often brings you a guiding figure from somewhere unexpected.
If you lose money and it was given or spent in good faith… it returns in ways you could not have predicted.
I have lost large sums in my life and simply decided: For every dollar I lose in good faith, the Universe gives me ten back.
And it does.
Because the Universe rises to meet us.
But only if we are willing to communicate honestly with ourselves and the Universe.
Most people stay stuck because they focus too much on the loss, the gaping hole.
And they completely miss what is arriving for them.
But the story doesn’t end here: our ducks gave us the final lesson!
The very next day, Pete grabbed a bucket of grain and started walking down the new path to the dam.
Now, our ducks are loud, enthusiastic, and highly motivated by food.
Usually, a bucket of grain is all it takes.
They follow immediately, waddling behind Pete like a loyal parade.
But not this time.
They stopped.
Looked at the path.
And refused.
Even the grain couldn’t convince them.
Instead, they turned and took the long way around across the lawn, the old, familiar route, all the way down to the dam.

Their breakfast destination was the same, but it took them much longer than Pete.
Are you like my ducks sometimes?
I know I am.
Life creates a new path for us.
A better, shorter, more aligned walkway.
A path we didn’t even know we needed
And what do we do?
We hesitate, resist, doubt our intuition, and revert to what we know, even when it is longer and harder, or when a reward awaits us.
We would rather walk the familiar path than trust the new one.
So here are some thoughts to contemplate:
Where in your life has something “died”; only to create space for something better?
And are you willing to walk the new path.
OR are you still taking the long way around?
If you’re ready to see what’s opening for you, come and spend a day with us at the Purple House Kitchen, where everything is designed to nourish you, ground you, and help you reconnect to what really matters
