Do you crave Chocolates? Can’t resist eating the whole bar of chocolate after the first nibble? You might be unwittingly self-medicating your magnesium deficiency.
Signs of magnesium deficiency are everywhere once you know what to look for! This post might help you recognize signs of classic magnesium deficiency in yourself or others.
Calcium deficiency is implicated in over 140 different diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, receding gums, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney stones, insomnia, heel spurs, bone spurs, cramps and twitches, PMS, low back pain … yet most people don’t need more calcium, they need more magnesium!
I am explaining this to my client who has been suffering from osteoporosis for years.

“Your milk intake and calcium supplements have made you worse rather than better. They are exacerbating your problems”. There is no easy way to tell her, so I may as well be straightforward.
She has never heard of magnesium, all she had been told was to drink lots of milk and have her calcium tablets.
“When it comes to your minerals, think of calcium as chalk and magnesium as the glue that keeps it all together,” I tell her. “When your bones are crumbling, you need superglue (magnesium) to transform the chalk into superior bones and teeth.”
This may sound simplistic, but it is even more simplistic to assume that calcium supplements will go straight into your bones. The reality is that when your magnesium stores are low, blood levels of calcium will be too high already. High levels of calcium in the blood may lead to hardening of the arteries, spurs on the spine and heels, kidney stones, calcification of your breast tissue which may lead to mastectomies and calcification of your ovaries and other glands, interfering with your hormone levels so you age prematurely and lose that overall youthful feel and look.
It is wrong to assume that osteoporosis and tooth decay can be prevented by high calcium intake.
Calcium intake is a prescription for accelerated ageing. There is published evidence that shows the Bantu women in Africa with a very low calcium intake have the lowest rate of osteoporosis in the world. Some Asian populations have very low daily calcium intake and they also have low incidence of osteoporosis. The higher the calcium intake, especially in the form of pasteurized and homogenized cow’s milk, the higher the incidence of osteoporosis.
Let me explain how this happens:
In our body, about half of the magnesium is found in the bones and the other half inside the cells of the tissues and organs. In contrast 99% of calcium is in the bones and the rest is in the fluid outside the cells.
To use your muscles calcium has to move into the cells. To relax, calcium has to be pumped out and magnesium flows back in. This calcium/magnesium pump mechanism requires energy.
When energy is lacking, calcium may build up inside the cells. This may lead to cramps, stiffness and poor blood circulation. As time goes on more and more soft tissue becomes calcified. All this calcium comes from the bones.
Nerves tissue can also accumulate calcium, cataracts may form, hormones go out of whack and all other cells become handicapped in their function.
The last thing you want to do now is pump more calcium into an already calcified body. You don’t want to become an Egyptian mummy before your time!

After a while your body thinks that being in a stressed state is normal and it keeps on pumping out stress hormones day and night. These hormones cause the loss of magnesium through your urine. The longer your stress levels last the more magnesium you lose. Magnesium is the circuit breaker that protects your Nervous System from blowing up.
Calcium will have the opposite effect, because it antagonizes the action of magnesium. You even need magnesium to produce energy. Where do you think energy is produced? Right inside each cell of your body.
And what does each cell need to produce energy? No, not a double shot coffee, it needs Magnesium! But if your body is flooded by calcium, magnesium can’t reach the cells or tissues.
