As the new year begins, have you ever looked back and noticed you are stronger or weaker than you were twelve months ago?
There really is no such thing as standing still in this life of ours.
We are constantly moving, even when it feels like nothing is happening.
We are either evolving or slowly devolving, becoming more ourselves or drifting further away, growing or decaying, strengthening or weakening.
Every thought we think, every word we speak, and every action we repeat is quietly shaping the person we are becoming.
Some people become better through life’s challenges, and others become bitter.
The difference is rarely intelligence, effort, or good intentions.
It is awareness.
Most people are genuinely confused about why positive change feels so hard, even when they want it deeply and sincerely.
The answer is because we humans are not mostly conscious creatures.
In fact, around ninety-five percent of how we think, feel, react, choose, love, protect ourselves is driven by our subconscious mind, the part of us that learned how to survive long before we ever learned how to dream.
Your conscious mind is the part of you that sets intentions and makes New Year resolutions.
Your conscious mind is the goal-setter, the part that says, “I want to be healthier, calmer, more confident, present, prosperous, more myself.”
But your subconscious mind is the 95% of us that is the goal getter, which is below our awareness.
It’s the part that actually runs the show, and it is not designed to make you happy, fulfilled, or successful.
It is designed to keep you safe.
And ‘safe’ does not always mean ‘healthy, joyful, or expansive according to your subconscious mind.
Safe often means familiar
This is why so many good people find themselves repeating the same patterns, choosing the same dynamics, hitting the same invisible ceiling, or quietly sabotaging themselves, even when they know better and even when part of them desperately wants something different.
It is not because you are weak.
It is because your subconscious is loyal to old survival programs that once helped you cope, belong, or endure, even if they now cost you energy, peace, health, or joy.
This is also why there is no such thing as inaction.
If nothing changes, the old programs keep running.
If awareness does not deepen, the default patterns strengthen.
And next year at this time, you will either be further along your path or further away from it, simply because the mind and nervous system always move in the direction they are already pointed.
One of the most helpful practices in my own life over the past year has been learning how to stay in my lane.
Every morning, I imagine myself diving into the swimming pool of the day ahead and swimming the length from morning to night.
My only real job is to stay in my lane, to keep returning to my own vertical core, to not crash into other people’s lanes, and not allow situations, dramas, or expectations to crash into mine.
Inside my lane, I find focus, clarity, energy, creativity, health, peace, beauty, inspiration, and connection.
Inside my lane there is very little drama, and that matters more than most people realise, because drama energy is the opposite of prosperity, vitality, and sustainable growth.
Staying in my lane does not mean I stop caring or helping others.
It means I do so without leaking energy, without losing myself, and without creating unnecessary ripples or fallout.
It means that at the end of the day, I still have petrol left in the tank, and that I have grown closer to myself, and that means everything to me.
Another simple but powerful practice that supported me deeply was beginning each day with this request: Surprise and delight me, Universe; On hard days, I would say: I am open to gifts. I am open to blessings.
That would keep me in a state of receptivity rather than alarm.
They are my precision tools.
And our thoughts really are tools, shaping the inner sculpture we are carving day by day, whether we are doing so consciously or not.
Now, as we step into this new year, I want to invite you to choose a word for the year, not as pressure, but as alignment.
A word that gently guides your choices, steadies your attention, and helps you stay in your lane.
- My word for 2026 is “living from appreciation”.
- Peter’s is soul-led.
A word for the year has a way of raising the bar without heavy lifting, of bringing the Universe into partnership with your efforts, of helping you grow without force, simply by staying aligned.
And remember this, too: we tend to overestimate what we can do in one year, and underestimate what we can do in three.
Real change is not dramatic.
It is cumulative.
It happens when the conscious mind sets a clear direction, and the subconscious mind feels safe enough to follow.
This is the work we do every day at Purple House: helping people bring their nervous system, subconscious patterns, and conscious intentions onto the same team, so life no longer feels like an internal tug-of-war.
If you feel called to begin this year differently, more gently, more honestly, and more aligned with who you truly are becoming, we would love to support you.
You do not need to fight yourself.
You need to understand yourself better.
This is much easier when somebody can laser-coach you, find your blind spots, and gently guide you from what I call the island of pain (where I spent many decades of my life) to the island of pleasure/prosperity.
And from there, change becomes not only possible, but sustainable.
